What are “SMART goals”?

SMART goals–or goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound–help turn abstract ideas into concrete plans with actionable steps. The process of setting SMART goals is especially useful in supporting executive functioning by reducing ambiguity and providing a concrete roadmap to accomplish goals.

While executive dysfunction is often experienced by individuals with neurodivergence or mental health challenges, anyone can benefit from using SMART goals to create structure, improve productivity, and work toward meaningful goals.
