FAQ's About Trauma & PTSD
What kinds of trauma do you treat?
We work with clients recovering from a wide range of traumatic experiences, including childhood abuse, interpersonal violence, identity-based discrimination (e.g., racism, homophobia), loss of a loved one, accidents, substance use crises, and complex mental health conditions.
In young adults, trauma often shows up as depression, anxiety, emotional detachment, panic attacks, disordered eating, substance use, and trouble with relationships or school. Many clients experience flashbacks, dissociation, and intense emotional triggers. We’re here to help clients understand these responses, build coping strategies, and reconnect with themselves and others.
What are the best practices for trauma treatment?
At The Dorm we tailor each client’s treatment plan to their unique needs and diagnoses- no two schedules look alike. For clients who are addressing trauma or PTSD as part of their treatment plan, our skilled clinicians employ several gold-standard therapeutic modalities for trauma treatment, including:
-
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), designed to help individuals process trauma and heal from distressing memories.
-
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), for emotional regulation and reprocessing trauma.
-
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), facilitated by EMDR-certified clinicians.
-
Seeking Safety, a group therapy model designed for individuals with co-occurring trauma and substance use issues.
-
Somatic therapies, such as yoga and functional movement, to address trauma stored in the body.
-
Mindfulness and meditation, shown to alleviate and support trauma symptoms.
Our multimodal approach ensures clients can find what works best for them and each modality can be explored through individual therapy, group therapy, clinical coaching, and as part of a collaborative family approach.
What makes The Dorm’s intensive trauma treatment unique?
At The Dorm, we offer an integrated and holistic approach to trauma therapy tailored specifically for young adults. Our program combines evidence-based clinical care with health and wellness services, family involvement, and community integration. This wrap-around model helps clients move from isolation to connection, promoting sustainable healing.
Each client receives a tailored, personalized care plan that works with their unique schedule, and has access to individual therapy, group therapy, health and wellness services (e.g. nutrition, yoga, functional movement), EMDR, and mindfulness modalities to explore the therapeutic tools that will benefit them for the long-term. Our clinicians work closely and collaboratively with families and outside providers to ensure seamless, coordinated care and aftercare planning.
Why is community so important in trauma recovery?
Trauma symptoms including depression, anxiety, psychosis, and other thought and mood disorders can be deeply isolating, especially during the young adult years. One of the most powerful antidotes to overcoming debilitating isolation is connection — to peers, family, and a supportive therapeutic team.
At The Dorm, we prioritize community-based healing through group therapy, social programming, sober peer networks, comprehensive family services, and shared community spaces like The Clubhouse, where clients can unwind between sessions, seek support through our clinical community manager, and importantly - have fun. Research shows that interpersonal connection helps reduce PTSD symptoms and builds the relational skills needed to thrive. Our clients support each other in recovery, helping to break the cycle of shame and silence that often accompanies trauma and PTSD.
How do I know if I am ready for intensive trauma therapy? (Or if my loved one is ready?)
Readiness for trauma therapy involves a willingness to face difficult emotions in a supportive environment. If you’ve been feeling stuck, triggered, or unable to fully engage in life, and traditional therapy hasn’t been enough, intensive trauma treatment may be the right next step.
Luckily, even if you or a loved one aren’t 100% ready to begin intensive trauma therapy at the onset of treatment, at The Dorm, our unique, individualized model ensures that each client is supported each step of the way, and engaged and support to develop the coping skills before engaging in deeper trauma work. We also ensure that there’s a strong therapeutic alliance, a solid support network, and a commitment to sobriety, all of which set the stage for healing. For those wondering if they’re ready, our team is here to help guide that conversations.
