What does a typical bipolar disorder treatment plan include?
Young adults who come to The Dorm with bipolar disorder typically engage in psychotherapy, medication management, and life skills groups. However, treatment schedules are tailored to the individual needs of each client, so no two treatment journeys are the same.
Specifically, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) can be two useful therapeutic modalities for young adults with bipolar disorder. Therapists may also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Psychosis, an evidence-based modality designed to help with the experiences of distressing symptoms of psychosis. In addition to therapy, clients work with partnered psychiatrists for regular medication management support. Our clinical team works closely with psychiatric providers to ensure cohesive, comprehensive care for all Dorm clients. If you or someone you know may be experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder, do not hesitate to reach out for help.
How is bipolar disorder type 1 vs type 2 treated differently?
The main differences between bipolar 1 and bipolar 2 are the length of manic episodes, which can be defined as periods of intense energy, psychosis, delusions, and even impulsive decision making. Individuals with bipolar 1 experience longer manic episodes, which can last from around a week to months at a time. People with bipolar 2 experience what is known as “hypomania”, manic episodes that are shorter in duration (a couple days to several weeks) and lower in intensity.
Individuals with bipolar 1 may need more intensive care such as inpatient or residential treatment, while people with bipolar 2 may experience milder symptoms and engage in a less intensive treatment. Again, each person is different and may need varying levels or types of care. If you are interested, read our blog post on 6 early signs of bipolar disorder, to learn more.
What medications are commonly used to treat bipolar disorder?
Many people with bipolar disorder take lithium, which is considered the first-line, gold standard medication for treating bipolar disorder. Unlike other medications, it has shown to be effective in preventing suicidal behavior. In addition, many people with bipolar disorder are on a combination of mood stabilizers, anti-psychotic medications, and anti-depressants. To find out the right medications for you or a loved one, it is always recommended to speak to a medical professional. All Dorm clients are supported by their clinical team in connecting with psychiatric providers for medication management.
What types of therapy are used in bipolar disorder treatment?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and CBT for psychosis are three useful forms of talk therapy for those with bipolar disorder. The right modalities and treatment plans greatly depend on the unique needs of each individual and at The Dorm, we tailor treatment plans so no two plans are the same.
How long does bipolar disorder treatment take and what results can I expect?
Bipolar disorder is a lifelong, chronic condition. Everyone’s treatment journey is different – some people see benefits in a few months while it might take other individuals longer. Many people with bipolar disorder go on to live fulfilling, successful lives. Engaging in treatment, taking the correct medication, and meeting regularly with clinicians are all important factors in supporting individuals with bipolar to lead successful lives.
