Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT)
We offer Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT), a data-driven treatment that has proven to be effective at improving the cognitive functioning of individuals who struggle with functional impairment (e.g. difficulties navigating schoolwork; getting and keeping a job, etc.).
By improving cognitive performance, we can help clients better manage activities of daily living (ADLs) and carry out the functional skills that are required for everyday life.
What is Cognitive Remediation Therapy?
Cognitive Remediation Therapy is a form of behavioral training and cognitive rehabilitation that helps improve cognitive functioning including processing speed, attention, language and verbal fluency, working memory, problem-solving and reasoning.
The Goals of Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT)
-
Help improve neurocognitive abilities and skills
-
Reduce cognitive deficits
-
Help individuals work through set tasks and improve their social functioning
Who Can Benefit from CRT?
CRT is a restorative treatment approach that has been proven in over one thousand studies to reteach brains how to learn. In particular, it can have a significant impact on individuals who have experienced deficits in their cognitive functioning as a result of living with a mental illness.
As an example, a young person who may have experienced periods of psychosis or other profound disorders of the brain may be effectively treated for those disorders, but experience significant lingering effects on their cognition (their ability to process the complex world and all its data). The impact can be debilitating. A young person may feel ill-equipped to manage a job, day-to-day homework assignments, or certain kinds of interactions. They may be categorized as “failure to launch” and viewed by some as unwilling to grow up and be responsible.
The good news is that CRT can have a meaningful, measurable impact on improving cognitive functioning and has proved beneficial for clients who need cognitive support to function more adaptively in society, particularly for those who have:
-
ADHD
-
Psychosis
-
Recurrent Depression
-
Schizophrenia
-
OCD
Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) for Young Adults at The Dorm
At The Dorm, we work with many young people who have experienced deficits in their cognitive functioning as a result of living with a mental illness and are seeking support for better, independent functioning.
Trained therapists work with clients using a combination of evidence-based software and discussion groups to help them practice, strengthen, and transfer skills to daily life. Data suggests that clients can expect to see clinically-significant gains by 15 weeks (or roughly 30 sessions). Often, significant gains are visible by 15-20 sessions, if attendance is perfect.
At the Dorm we offer multiple (CRT) groups of 6-8 clients, running at the same time with different starting points, per best practices.
