How Parents Can Talk to Kids About The Death of Their Celebrity Hero

The tragic and premature loss of sports star, Kobe Bryant, was heartbreaking for citizens across the country but for many young people, the loss of their celebrity hero was particularly difficult to process. Dr. Amanda Fialk, Chief of Clinical Services at The Dorm, spoke with Caroline Bologna at The HuffPost on how best parents could talk to their kids about the death of their celebrity hero.

Kobe Bryant with Kids

“For adolescents who have little experience with trauma, death, pain, or stress, this will be the first time they experience the overwhelming emotions related to grief. This can be frightening and many don’t have the self-awareness to know what types of coping strategies will help…this is a great opportunity for parents to normalize feelings and emotions and help young adults process their experience in a way that is positive and supportive.”
