How do I know if I need ADHD treatment?

This is an important and personal question — one that we often hear young adults ask themselves. We encourage young people to consider how much ADHD symptoms may be affecting their day-to-day life. In general, treatment is recommended if what you’re experiencing is interfering with:

  • Your ability to perform at school or work

  • Your relationships (both professional and personal)

  • Your daily functioning (e.g., remembering tasks, managing responsibilities, organizing your time)

If life is starting to feel like a struggle, it’s worth reaching out for support. At The Dorm, we work with young adults living with ADHD and other diagnoses, helping them better manage everyday challenges.

Can I get assessed for ADHD at The Dorm?

Assessment can be a valuable experience for anyone who is questioning whether ADHD may be affecting their daily life. It offers clarity and insight into their experiences, along with opportunities to build skills that help manage challenges and leverage personal strengths.

At The Dorm, neuropsychological testing and assessment are available through United Assessment (UA) — one of the country’s most well-respected providers of high-quality evaluations. UA meets weekly with our clinical team, allowing for a deep understanding of our client population and their assessment needs. This collaboration supports early and timely interventions, ensuring diagnostic clarity and informed, data-driven treatment planning that can be implemented right away.

What if I have more than just an ADHD diagnosis?

Many young adults have an ADHD diagnosis alongside other mental health conditions. In fact, 93% of our community present with more than one diagnosis. One of our community’s greatest strengths is our ability to support individuals with a wide range of presentations and clinical experiences — reflecting the complexity and diversity of the world at large. We’re all multi-faceted individuals.

As a result of care within our multi-diagnostic community, clients report 138% improvement in overall well-being. Learn more here

What treatment modalities are available?

All of our clinicians are trained in the most well-respected, evidence-based therapeutic modalities and create individualized treatment plans tailored to each client’s unique needs and goals.

For clients with ADHD, we often find that a combination of CBT and/or DBT — adapted specifically for ADHD — is most effective. These approaches focus on managing thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. In addition, Clinical Coaching and Executive Function Coaching can help support the development and practice of essential life skills such as planning, time management, and organization.

All coaching at The Dorm is provided by licensed therapists who take a goal- and action-oriented approach to help individuals meet their needs and achieve meaningful progress.

Lastly, our clients with ADHD often benefit from skill-based groups like Life Skills or Executive Function Group as well as group curriculums that have been specifically designed for our neurodiverse population, including Neurodiverse DBT and Neurodiversity Process Group.

How is ADHD treatment at The Dorm different?

Clients with neurodiversity represent the fastest-growing population at The Dorm, and we’re committed to meeting their needs through a consistently research-driven, evidence-based approach. This includes developing new, tailored curriculums like Neurodiverse DBT group and offering targeted supports such as dedicated in-house Executive Function Coaching with a full-time, licensed clinician.

Today, our neurodiverse clients are experiencing symptom improvements on par with their neurotypical peers — including increased self-confidence and a stronger sense of self-efficacy in their ability to achieve goals and solve problems.
