What Is Borderline Personality Disorder? - New York City - Washington, D.C.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a personality disorder characterized by instability in relationships, impulsivity, volatility, negative self-image and thought patterns as well as unhealthy behaviors such as self-harm. An accurate diagnosis is important for two reasons:

  1. Symptoms can become more ingrained and rigid with time. It is best to treat when symptoms first present during teenage and young adult years.
  2. There is a high prevalence of comorbid borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder. Symptoms of BPD can often look very similar to Bipolar Disorder (BD) symptoms. Accurate and early diagnosis or BPD is necessary for appropriate and effective treatment planning and BPD has specific types of treatment and interventions that are effective.

Environmental and genetic factors can impact whether or not an individual has a borderline personality disorder.

  • Environmental factors may include a history of abuse, neglect and trauma.
  • Some studies suggest that borderline personality disorder may be inherited and/or strongly connected to mental health disorders in family members.
