Emotional Dysregulation is a common diagnosis that we treat at The Dorm. If you or a loved one is struggling with regulating thoughts or behaviors, please contact our team to learn more about howwe can help.
Clients who struggle with emotional dysregulation will often have difficulty modulating and regulating their emotions, especially when they are faced with environmental stressors or conflicts within their interpersonal relationships. As a defense mechanism to avoid abandonment or pain, they react with heightened bursts of anger, hypersensitivity to specific stimuli, irritability, passive-aggressive behaviors and emotional suffering.
There are many reasons why an individual may experience emotional dysregulation. Some (though not all) can include the experience of historical psychological traumas like childhood neglect, abuse or high-conflict interpersonal relations, diagnosed psychiatric disorders or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
We offer support through individual, group and family therapy, symptom management through meditation and other mindful practices, as well as social and relational coaching.
AT THE DORM, OUR INTEGRATED APPROACH TO TREATING INDIVIDUALS DIAGNOSED WITH EMOTIONAL DYSREGULATION INCLUDES:
This is provided at both the group and individual level to offer insight and support around the diagnosis of emotional dysregulation.
Clients are taught how to regulate emotions and behaviors using DBT, CBT, and mindfulness skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills in meditation groups and related settings.
Given the impact that this disorder can have on relationships and the family network, we help clients process with peers and explore ways to effectively communicate and engage with parents/caregivers in family therapy.
The Dorm works closely with treating psychiatrists to support medication compliance and management.
We believe that alternative and holistic approaches to treatment can benefit almost all clients. Yoga, meditation, mindfulness and other various forms of exercise are offered at both an individual and group level. This helps with symptom management and stress relief.
