Personality disorders are enduring patterns of thoughts and behaviors that differ greatly from normal patterns found in society. They diverge from other mental health diagnoses in that they can be more pervasive and typically develop between the teenage and young adult years. The symptoms can become more ingrained and rigid with time if not treated when they first emerge and develop.
We treat all personality disorders which include: paranoid personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, antisocial, borderline, histrionic and narcissistic personality disorders, as well as avoidant, dependant and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders.
We focus on resolving problematic and unhealthy behaviors and teaching clients the skills they need to self-manage and regulate.
AT THE DORM, OUR INTEGRATED APPROACH TO TREATING YOUNG ADULTS WITH PERSONALITY DISORDERS INCLUDES:
Education will be provided to clients so that they can better understand their personality disorder, how it impacts them, and what tools and skills they will need to work on to achieve their goals of independence.
Meeting with an individual skills therapist whose purpose is to help a client to develop and integrate skills for everyday life can have an enormous impact. These skills can include learning to take medication regularly, developing and being accountable to a schedule, role-playing through tough scenarios, developing job skills and so much more.
Many clients diagnosed with a personality disorder benefit from developing skills that help them get to get through the day-to-day. Useful groups may include DBT skills coaching, meditation, yoga, CBT, seeking safety, process groups and relationship groups.
Individual therapy is generally provided to clients (unless they are working with an outside provider) to help them process and work through living with a personality disorder and how this impacts their lives and relationships.
This coaching generally involves connecting with a client's support system and helping them develop the skills to best support their loved one in need.
Many of our clients with personality disorders benefit from being in a supportive community of other young adults with similar or different struggles who can empathize and uplift each other.
There is a strong connection between mental health and physical well being with personality disorders. At The Dorm, we have a series of providers that can help to establish strong mental and physical practices including yoga, meditation and acupuncture.
The symptoms of some personality disorders may be mitigated with medication which is managed as part of a holistic treatment plan. This is carefully monitored in connection with an outside provider to ensure medication is utilized properly and effectively.
