Mathew Elder

Mathew (“Mat”) Elder is a clinician passionate about integrated and holistic mental healthcare. He has extensive experience designing individualized programs for clients struggling with a variety of mental health challenges, and his social work journey has encompassed opportunities within criminal justice, family court, addiction, and harm reduction services. He has dedicated years of experience to the care and treatment of LGBTQIA+ youth and adults. He earned his Master’s in Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, Master’s in Public Health from the CUNY School of Public Health, and Master’s of Fine Arts from Smith College.

In his work with clients, Mat believes that change begins at the threshold of discomfort. With compassion and respect, he encourages young adults to “get comfortable with the uncomfortable” and embrace new coping skills and thought patterns during treatment. His work engages clients in supportive confrontation, which involves valuing their personal stories while pushing clients to challenge themselves and their worldviews to enact meaningful, long-term change.

Mat also draws heavily on his experience and education in public health, which focused on program development, implementation, and evaluation, especially within queer-affirming healthcare and integrated care. He led the development and implementation of community health group therapy, community service, and learning programming for middle and high schoolers throughout NYC. Additionally, Mat worked with Together 5000 as a data analyst and author exploring HIV vaccine readiness among gay and bisexual men. This led to a paper currently pending approval at a major public health publication.

In prior roles, Mat was a professional dancer and educator for several years and taught dance classes for all bodies, ages, and capabilities, including for the disabled and homeless. He uses tenets from his body-centered practice with his clients and enjoys bringing his experience as an artist to his holistic approach to care.
