Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
At The Dorm we offer Cognitive Processing Therapy, a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that has proven to be effective in treating symptoms of PTSD, depression and anxiety.
CPT may be helpful for any young adult client who has experienced one or several painful events and who continues to feel “stuck” by their beliefs about themselves, others, and the world-at-large.
What is Cognitive Processing Therapy?
CPT is commonly used as an alternative to controversial prolonged-exposure treatment. Instead of revisiting memories of difficult experiences themselves, CPT focuses on promoting psychoeducation and helping clients address and reframe the negative beliefs that have stemmed from their experiences.
CPT has been found to exhibit clinically-meaningful reduction in PTSD, depression and anxiety symptoms among a variety of samples, with results maintained at 5 and 10 years post treatment follow-ups.
The Goals of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
-
Identify “stuck points” in thinking in the following areas: Power/Control, Intimacy, Esteem and Safety
-
Re-evaluate and change the painful and often distorted thoughts clients may have adopted since their traumatic experience
-
Decrease emotional numbing (i.e. difficulty feeling feelings), avoidance of trauma reminders, and other PTSD symptoms that diminish one’s quality of life
CPT consists of 12 60-90 minute sessions with results that are measured weekly with the PCL-5 (PTSD Checklist for DSM-5). In each CPT session, clients will attempt to reframe negative beliefs, with assistance from their trained therapist, in the form of socratic questioning. This style of treatment works well for young adults who tend to appreciate synergetic learning and may find other treatment modalities less engaging.
Who Can Benefit from CPT Therapy?
Our Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) supports are designed to help individuals who may experience one or many of the following:

-
Significant struggles with self-esteem, trust, control, intimacy, or safety, due to a client’s one or many painful life experiences
